About Tamik
Tamik Kirkland is more than his incarceration. He is a father, a son, a brother, an entrepreneur, a student, an activist, and a man determined to fight for justice—not only for himself, but for others.
The middle child of three brothers, Tamik was raised by a single mother while his father was incarcerated. Growing up, he developed an early passion for music and entrepreneurship—two interests that helped shape his ambitions and the future he envisioned for himself.
Before his incarceration, Tamik attended college in Springfield, Massachusetts, and started several small businesses. Most importantly, he became a father. His daughter was only three years old when he went to prison, leaving him to experience some of the most important years of her life from behind prison walls.
But incarceration did not stop Tamik from learning, growing, or finding ways to make an impact.
Throughout his incarceration, he has completed numerous institutional programs and continued pursuing his education. He obtained his barber license, earned a paralegal certificate through an outside correspondence course, and is currently enrolled at Tufts University, where he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Civic Studies.
As his knowledge of the law and the criminal justice system grew, so did his commitment to advocacy.
Tamik founded Always F.A.I.R., Inc. (Fight Against Injustices & Racism) and cofounded No Longer Three Fifths, an organization focused on ending felony disenfranchisement. He also volunteers with Emancipation Initiative, an organization focused on ending life-without-parole sentences.
Despite being incarcerated, Tamik has refused to allow prison walls to silence his voice. By telephone, he has participated in speeches and interviews advocating for these issues, and he has testified at the Massachusetts Statehouse in support of prison reform legislation.
At the center of Tamik’s story is also his own fight for justice.
Tamik maintains his innocence and continues studying the law while working to overturn what he says is a wrongful conviction. Despite the obstacles he says he has faced from prison officials, he remains committed to pursuing his case, continuing his education, advocating for change, and maintaining hope for the day he can return home to his family.
Justice for Tamik is about more than one case. It is about ensuring his story is heard, his claims are examined, and his fight for justice is not forgotten
His Story is Not Over.
